Malaysia September exports up 2.6%, beats forecast on firmer US demand
Malaysia's exports for the month of September rose a stronger-than-expected 2.6 percent year-on-year, recovering from a 4.5 percent plunge the previous month, on stronger demand in Asia and the United States, the Trade Ministry said.
Exports to Southeast Asian countries were up 18.9 percent, while shipments to the United States grew for a fifth consecutive month compared to a year ago.
China and the European Union remained weak spots, dropping 10.8 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively because of weaker demand for commodities such as crude rubber and palm oil as well as electrical and chemical products.
Shipments of electrical and electronic products, which made up for more than a third of September's total exports, rose 4.8 percent year-on-year, thanks to demand from the U.S, the Netherlands, Thailand, India and Taiwan. (Reuters)
