Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) in the United Arab Emirates has awarded Konecranes a contract for an automated container yard system. The order includes 30 automated stacking cranes (ASC) and a container terminal operating system (TOS). The value of the order is over EUR 80 million. The cranes will be taken into operation in the new Khalifa Port in two phases: 14 cranes by the end of March 2012 and 16 by the end of June 2012.

Formed by the Abu Dhabi Government in 2006, ADPC is a master developer and manager of ports and industrial zones in U.A.E. ADPC's Khalifa Port development is an infrastructural landmark that will support the development of KIZAD as a major industrial zone in the region. It features the latest technology and is designed to accommodate the largest ships. When ready the new port will have an initial capacity of two million TEUs.

“We are delighted to sign this contract which marks another milestone in our journey to have the first phase of the port ready by Q4 2012,” says ADPC CEO Tony Douglas. “Konecranes will deliver their units on time and to budget and are another of our key partners in realizing this flagship project.”

“We are excited at being part of developments in Abu Dhabi,” says Niklas Brönn, Managing Director of Konecranes Middle East FZE in the U.A.E. “Interest in automated container terminals is increasing globally and Konecranes has a field-proven solution for these.”

This order features the latest in yard automation system delivery including cranes, automation systems and a terminal operating system, and is the first Konecranes ASC delivery in the Middle East. The company has previously delivered 30 ASCs to a container terminal in Virginia, USA and 36 ASCs are on order for a terminal in Barcelona, Spain.

Konecranes' adaptive yard automation system enables efficient container handling, cutting cycle times, saving energy and reducing operating costs. The ASCs are equipped with Konecranes' Active Load Control system with active Sway Prevention and Horizontal Fine Positioning systems, ensuring efficient and uninterrupted use of the cranes, with both automatic and remote control. The delivery also includes a terminal operating system for real-time planning and control of the terminal. This integrates the entire terminal operation from gate to quay. The graphical interface gives improved visibility and better control of container movement within the terminal.
