Air France-KLM, Europe's largest airline by revenue, posted a 4.9 percent rise in May passenger traffic.

The rise in traffic fell short of a capacity increase of 5.9 percent, depressing the passenger load factor, the proportion of seats sold, by 0.7 percentage points to 79.8 percent of capacity.

Political unrest in Africa and the Middle East and the consequences of Japan's earthquake disaster continued to weigh on demand to and from the regions, Air France-KLM said.

It said cargo traffic fell 1.4 percent due to the civil unrest in Africa and the Middle East as well as overcapacity on departures from Asia. (Reuters)
