Athens International Airport has recorded the best month for freight and mail traffic since the new airport opened some eight years ago. A total of 11.3 thousand tons was handled, a 22% increase over April 2007. Apart from an overall rise in traffic, this result was helped by several factors such as the timing of the Greek Orthodox Easter, which attracts increased amounts of seasonal import cargo, as well as the need to handle some very urgent cargo arising from industrial action at the port of Piraeus.

Amongst the extra shipments during April, the Emirates B747 freighter called twice during its Dubai ' Hahn ' Toledo rotation. This was for delivering higher than normal imports in addition to the 25 tons (120 cubic meters) capacity available on the daily scheduled B 777 passenger flights.
