The biggest railway in the Red River Valley has closed some lines due to flooding, as river levels rise and swamp fields.

BNSF Railway Co said it halted service on half-dozen rail lines in North Dakota, including around Grand Forks, Minot and Bismarck, some of the state's biggest cities.

Some rail lines are closed to allow dikes to cross track, BNSF said in a message to customers posted on its website.

"There may be a few industries that we may not be able (to) service due to high waters and reroutes may be established as necessary," BNSF said.

The Red River Valley is a key U.S. producer of sugar beets, spring wheat and durum.

Canadian National Railway Co spokesman Warren Chandler its line from Winnipeg to Emerson in the Canadian province of Manitoba has not yet closed at Morris for flood preparations.

The Red River Valley is headed for its third-highest crest on record at Grand Forks as snow melts on saturated ground. (Reuters)
