Railway workers in Bosnia's Serb region called off a strike that had disrupted shipments of raw materials to major industries across Bosnia for the second time in two months.

Cargo traffic in the Serb Republic was cut by around 70 percent after railway workers went on strike on Feb. 7 over 21 million Bosnian marka ($14.6 million) in overdue wages. They threatened to bring transport to a halt unless the government settled the issue.

"We have agreed to call off the general strike, though we are not pleased with the agreed payment dynamics," said Zlatko Marin, head of the railway workers' union.

The strike has hurt industries such as alumina plant Birac, construction firm Sirbegovic, iron ore miner ArcelorMittal Prijedor and steelmaker ArcelorMittal Zenica, both affiliates of top world steelmaker ArcelorMittal.

The Serb Republic railway strike came less then two months after workers in Bosnia's other autonomous half, the Muslim-Croat federation, halted traffic over suspension of engine drivers and changes to a collective bargaining deal. (Reuters)
