Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc., dedicated its new 65-door service center in Lumberton, N.C. Attended by local dignitaries, customers, government and company officials, the ceremony showcased the facility’s expanded capabilities to provide fast, reliable and safe freight transportation services for customers.
The new facility is located at 4715 West 5th Street and features a 25,000-square-foot dock with 65 loading doors. It will have the capacity to process higher shipment volumes, servicing an expanded regional footprint that combines smaller operations in Florence, S.C., and Fayetteville and Wilmington, N.C., into a larger, modern and more efficient single facility.
“Lumberton is a key asset for our network given its strategic location on I-95’s major north-south corridor. The additional capacity and modern design of this facility also provides room for growth, operational flexibility and opportunity to increase efficiencies,” said Tom Clark, senior vice president of operations for Con-way Freight. “As we grow our business with customers in the Greater Lumberton area, we intend to expand our workforce and bring more jobs to this community.”
“The new Con-way Freight facility represents an important economic investment in the Lumberton community,” said Mayor Raymond B. Pennington. “Not only will the new facility create local jobs, it also underscores that Lumberton is a vital transportation hub for freight moving north and south.”
Con-way employs 95 local residents out of the Lumberton service center in positions such as driver sales representative, customer service, sales, and freight operations and management, serving over 2,500 local businesses. The Lumberton facility is one of seven Con-way Freight service centers in North Carolina. The facility is strategically located halfway between New York City and Miami, and close to Interstate Highway 95, enabling service in two days or less to cities as far north as Bangor, Maine; south to Miami; and west to Fargo, N.D., Dallas; and Kansas City, Kan.
Additionally, Con-way Freight will soon open a company-operated driver training school in Lumberton. The school is designed to help the company fulfill its needs for qualified, skilled driver sales representatives. The program, which is offered at nearly 90 Con-way Freight locations nationwide, provides classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training designed to prepare students with the necessary training, skills and education to earn a commercial driver’s license and embark on a successful career as a professional Con-way Freight truck driver.
