Crowley Maritime Corp. announced that Suz Michel has assumed the role of vice president of safety and learning, a position that gives her oversight for both the Safety, Security, Quality & Environmental (SSQE) and People Development & Learning (PDL) groups. Michel, who will relocate from Seattle to Jacksonville, will continue to report to Carl Fox, senior vice president of corporate services.

In her new role, Michel will lead the blending of these two groups under a singular managerial focus to promote synergies in the delivery of training, compliance and operational excellence. Also under Michel's leadership, the SSQE team will continue to ensure that Crowley's safety culture - the company's most important core value - is applied to all areas of business and embodied by all employees. Additionally, Michel will ensure that another important company value, Our People, continues to promote developmental opportunities for company employees.

"Suz has been instrumental in our culture-changing process here at Crowley," said Fox. "She has moved the company to a new level of excellence, and has helped our employees to develop core competencies that raise the level of ability for them to do their jobs well and safely. Additionally she will help lead our safety culture initiatives as we continue to focus on its importance."

Michel most recently assumed the role of vice president for PDL in early 2011 and has now replaced Cole Cosgrove in this senior SSQE position. Cosgrove recently assumed the role of vice president of marine operations for Crowley's liner services groups.

In 2004 Michel joined Crowley in an SSQE role focused on regulatory safety training. In 2007, she was promoted to director of PDL. During her tenure with Crowley, Michel has been instrumental in shaping the department and reinforcing Crowley's core value, Our People. Programs have included leadership, supervision and employee development, as well as safety training for crew and terminals.
