Crowley announced today that Art Mead has been promoted to vice president and general counsel. He will remain domiciled in Jacksonville and continue to report to Bill Verdon, senior vice president and general counsel in Oakland.
Mead will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the corporate legal department in Jacksonville and be engaged in a wide array of legal affairs, including commercial negotiations, regulatory and litigation matters, acquisitions and other business transactions both domestically and internationally. He will also play a larger role in corporate governance by overseeing the corporate secretarial function and will be actively involved in Crowley's government relations.
"Art has been a valued member of the legal team for nine years," said Verdon. "In addition to his new responsibilities, we look forward to him taking a more active role in the broad array of legal activities critical to Crowley's success."
Mead joined Crowley in June of 1996 as associate corporate counsel and was later promoted to corporate counsel for Crowley in Oakland. Most recently he served as senior corporate counsel in Jacksonville.
Prior to joining Crowley, Mead worked at the US Department of Justice, Admiralty and Shipping Division and held commercial marine transportation related positions at Stolt-Nielsen, Inc. and Maersk Line Limited. He earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from the State University of New York, Maritime College at Fort Schuyler and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco where he served as associate editor of the Law Review. In addition to being a member of the California Bar and authorized Florida counsel, Mead also is a Reserve Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy.
