The popularity of D'sseldorf as both a passenger and cargo/distibution center for the Northern half of Germany has encouraged many airlines to operate at this airport. Ghana International Airlines started a B757 service in November last year, which will become daily very shortly and from summer, Icelandair will commence a B757 service from Reykjavik to D'sseldorf daily, whilst Mahan Air is already operating four flights per week with an A 310 and will expand to daily frequencies shortly.

Gerton Hulsman, managing Director of DUS Cargo Logistics, the biggest cargo handler at the airport is delighted that the high passenger profile provides excellent cargo capacity. ' This is Germany's third largest airport with over 18 million passengers and a potential of some 300.000 tons of cargo per annum and serving 170 destinations worldwide. The addition of these new flights is going to add some really useful extra capacity. We are very happy to handle cargo carriers both freighters and passenger and we are building up a well balanced portfolio of airline and forwarder business'.

Being at the heart of North Rhine Westphalia, Germany's leading industrial and commercial region, accounting for 32% of Germany's GDP, the airport and logistics network distribute goods throughout the whole of Northern Germany, the Benelux and Europe. Traditional manufacturing has been matched by modern hi-tech industries. The airport is a key factor in this success story.

Hulsman further points out 'It's clear that with so many other competitive airports within a few hours drive, we have to keep on our toes to maintain our traffic , look after our forwarders and attract new customers. Giving that extra attention to customers and making special effort to deliver high quality performance are therefore our top priorities If you consider the increasing reluctance of many big airports to accept all cargo flights, make freighter friendly airports such as Dusseldorf an easy choice for shippers, forwarders and airlines.'

With a total of around 100,000 tons annually, Dus Logistics handles inbound cargo for 53 airlines and outbound for 30. The existing warehouse of 150,000 ton annual capacity could be doubled for future expansion.
