Rotterdam port cargo volumes decline in Q1
The port of Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest, said on Friday its cargo volumes fell 1 percent to 109 million tons in the first quarter of 2013 on sluggish growth of the European economy.“Considerably more empty containers were handled than in the first three months of 2012. It is expected that this will be the picture for the entire first six months due to the disappointing developments in the European economy,” the port authority said in a statement.
Rotterdam, a major transit point for commodities and manufactured goods, at the end of 2012 forecast modest growth in cargo volumes of only around 2 percent for this year because of the weak state of the Dutch and German economies. (Reuters)
