A fire in Rotterdam's port, Europe's largest for the import of crude oil, was under control and posed no threat to surrounding facilities or factories, Dutch police authorities said.

The fire started at a metal processor called Jewometaal in the Rotterdam Botlek area at the start of the evening and had threatened an adjacent warehouse, a police spokesman for the Rotterdam area said.

Fire fighters gained control around 2130 local time (2030 GMT) and no one has been injured, he said.

Rotterdam is the largest European port for the import of crude oil, and the biggest port for iron ore supplies to the German blast furnaces in the Ruhr region. (Reuters)
