Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. cautioned its customers that a flood-damaged line through North Dakota could be out of service for another week.

The line linking Western Canada with the U.S. Midwest has been closed since June 20, when the rain-swollen Souris River began flooding areas near the city of Minot in north-central North Dakota.

The Souris flooding is the latest in a series of weather-related woes that have played havoc with Canadian Pacific this year, weakening its results in the first quarter. It has not released a cost estimate for the North Dakota flooding.

Canadian Pacific has diverted traffic using both its own lines and the lines of other railroads, and its crews are repairing washouts caused by the flooding.

Fadi Chamoun, a transportation sector analyst at BMO Capital Markets, said Canadian Pacific had been able to restore its operations to normal levels relatively quickly after its earlier weather outages.

"Demand is good and the ability to rebound is there," Chamoun said.
