Short-line railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc said carloads for April jumped 16 percent, its highest rise in more than a year.

Genesee's traffic in April was 72,023 carloads, an increase of 9,979 carloads from a year ago.

Genesee saw an increase in carloads for the first time in 12 months in March, when carloads were up about 7 percent.

Before that, traffic had been on the decline due to a weak freight environment.

Coal, coke and ores -- which account for nearly a quarter of Genesee's total traffic -- increased 11 percent in April to 15,715 carloads, primarily due to increased coal shipments in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Railroad operator RailAmerica said total freight carloads for April were up 10.7 percent. (Reuters)
