The Port of Halifax has reached a significant milestone. Fifteen million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo have moved through the Port since the first container in 1969. The announcement was made during Port Days 2014. “This is a significant achievement for the entire Port of Halifax community,” said Karen Oldfield, President and CEO, Halifax Port Authority. “Every container that passes through the Port helps to build the economy of our province and our country. It’s thanks to the hard work of everyone involved – the importers and exporters, terminal operators, stevedores, pilots, tug operators and of course our partners in the shipping industry – that we have been able to reach 15 million TEUs.” Halifax by the numbers: • 15 million TEUs lined end-to-end is equivalent to 300 million feet of cargo, or 91,440 kilometres • There would be enough container boxes to circle the globe twice and still have enough left to go from Halifax to Calgary and back again. • 15 million TEUs represents 123,091,198 metric tonnes of containerized cargo • Over the years, this volume of cargo has moved through the Port of Halifax on 26,300 container vessels Another landmark achievement coming out of Port Days 2014 is the near completion of the Richmond Multipurpose Terminals project. This provides the Port of Halifax with an additional 450 metre (1500 feet) of new dock with 14 metre (45 foot) draft; approximately 7000 square metres (75,000 square feet) of shed space with rail doors, rail access and truck access, five acres of laydown space. This is an extremely flexible facility with the ability to support everything from project cargo to offshore oil development.
