Halterm Container Terminal has achieved certification to the highest international environmental standard - ISO 14001 - the first container terminal in the Maritimes to achieve this recognition for environmental excellence. Halterm’s CEO and Managing Director, Ashley Dinning, said today that ISO 14001 certification provides a high level of comfort to the surrounding community that all members of the Halterm team are invested in managing resources, reducing waste and protecting the local environment. “It also gives us a significant competitive advantage in that shipping lines and cargo owners demand increasingly stringent environmental targets of their global supply chains” he said. “Achieving and maintaining the ISO 14001 standard means we should pre-qualify all environmental requirements of existing and potential new shipping line customers” he said. In the 18 months leading up to certification the Halterm team has exhaustively examined all of its processes and systems, to ensure the terminal meets the demanding criteria for certification to ISO 14001. The certification authority measures a comprehensive list of criteria, including environmental policy, roles and responsibilities of the whole team, operational controls, emergency preparedness and response, ongoing monitoring & measurement, records & document control, training, communication, management commitment, objectives and targets, such as reduction of non-renewable fossil fuels, plus compliance with all Federal, Provincial, Municipal and Civic regulations. “Achieving initial certification is only the beginning” Dinning said today. “We will be audited every year to ensure we maintain our high environmental standards.  “Halterm is totally committed to continuous review and improvement, both in the interests of the local environment and in growing the business in a highly competitive global market” he said.
