Hermes Transport Logistics and the industrial corporation Europipe are new customers for Eco Plus, the carbon-free option from DB Schenker Rail in which the traction current required for the transport is obtained from renewable energy sources in Germany.

"We are delighted that Hermes and Europipe have now chosen this carbon-free rail transport option. This is further proof that our environment friendly product is appreciated across all the different market sectors," commented Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Member of the Management Board for Transportation and Logistics at DB Mobility Logistics AG.

Hermes Transport Logistics GmbH has had its transports on the Hamburg'Kornwestheim and Hamburg'Bamberg routes handled by carbon-free rail freight since October, making it the first combined transport customer to change over its rail transports to this carbon-free alternative. The transport of 1400 standard containers (TEU) per annum is handled by the operator TFG Transfracht Internationale Gesellschaft f'r kombinierten G'terverkehr mbH & Co. KG.

By swapping its transports to Eco Plus, Hermes can reduce its CO2 emissions by 112 tons per annum compared with standard rail transport. "It is becoming increasingly important for our company to reduce its carbon footprint. By choosing Eco Plus, we have reached a further milestone in our environment strategy," explains Eckhardt Fechtner, Ocean and Air Freight Manager at Hermes Transport Logistics GmbH. Back in summer, Hermes had already launched its own environmental logo, in which the slogan "We do!" underlined the excellent carbon efficiency of the company's transport services.

EUROPIPE GmbH is based in M'lheim an der Ruhr and now uses Eco Plus on the M'lheim'Brake route, which is used for the carriage of some of the pipes for the planned Baltic Sea pipeline. Up to three block trains consisting of 27 freight cars, each carrying 108 pipes, travel on this route every day. Savings of 300 tons of CO2 are now achieved on these transports compared with standard rail transport.

Jens H'selhoff, Senior Manager Logistics at EUROPIPE GmbH, comments: "Since the middle of August we have opted for renewable energy sources for the transport of our pipes from M'lheim to Brake. By the time the project is completed, a total volume of 90,000 tons will have been carried on this carbon-free option."

Customers can decide to change over to Eco Plus on all routes inside Germany. The carbon-free transport option and the procurement of the energy used have been verified by the technical supervisory authority T'V S'D. DB uses ten percent of the revenues from Eco Plus to finance the construction of new production plant for renewable energy.

DB Schenker Rail's Eco Plus product rounds off the DB Climate Protection Program 2020, which is intended to reduce the specific CO2 emissions of the DB Group worldwide by a further 20 percent between 2006 and 2020. DB Schenker also plays its part in achieving that target by offering intelligent combinations of the individual transport modes throughout its entire international network, which serve as the basis for this environmental advantage. Further information about the environmental commitment of DB is available at www.dbecoprogram.com.

Customers who wish to check their own carbon footprint precisely for routes all over the world can do so with our online tool EcoTransIT World, which is available at www.dbschenker.com/ecotransit. EcoTransIT World reliably calculates the emissions of CO2 and other pollutants for different transport modes such as train, truck, plane, seagoing vessels and barges and for combined transport options. It is based on a scientifically verified method and database.
