With a combined total of 76 consecutive years of operation without any environmental incidents, 12 Horizon Lines vessels were recognized for environmental achievement: Anchorage (4); Eagle (3); Enterprise (20); Hawk (3); Hunter (3); Kodiak (9); Pacific (10); Producer (7); Reliance (9); Spirit (3); Tacoma (3); Tiger (2). Maritime Administrator, David T. Matsuda, and Rear Admiral Brian Salerno, Deputy Commandant for Operations, U.S. Coast Guard participated in the award ceremony.
"In today's world, it seems our industry only gets front-page news when spills or other environmental problems occur. It is encouraging to see how many vessels go for years achieving environmental excellence," said Joseph J. Cox, President and CEO of CSA. The awards are open to all owners and operators of vessels that operate on oceans or inland waterways.
"We are committed to environmental excellence within our operations; day-in and day-out. It's an honor to be recognized for our ongoing environmental stewardship efforts," said John V. Keenan, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Horizon Lines.
Horizon Lines was recognized twice earlier this year for deploying green strategies in their operations. In November, Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine presented the company with a 2010 Green Supply Chain Award, which honors companies that are making sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategies. In June, Horizon Lines was named a Top 50 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics magazine for the company's environment initiatives, which include reducing empty backhaul miles through logistics network optimization, reducing fossil fuel consumption, and using recycled materials to build containers.
