Kansas City Southern said that it expects its second-half revenue to increase almost 20 percent due to rebounding freight volumes, providing what it characterized as a "very strong finish" to the year.

It was the first time the company provided a forecast for second-half revenue.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based railroad said August was the best month for carloadings so far this year -- and the second best month in the past three years.

The company also updated investors on the impact Hurricane Alex had on its operations.

It said freight volumes fell 18.1 percent during the four weeks that the storm, which flooded some of its tracks in Mexico, affected operations.

But it said those volumes had rebounded once repairs were made and normal service resumed and that August volumes were up 13.7 percent over August 2009 and "slightly over pre-recession 2008 August volumes." (Reuters)
