The new FedEx Ground hub opened on schedule this month, bringing the highly anticipated project to fruition.

The roughly 400,000-square-foot hub on Old Greensboro Road is important because it will help bolster the Triad's reputation as a logistics and transportation center and add to FedEx Ground's extensive network of hubs located in such cities as Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville.

'We are very excited that we are finally in full operation ' we opened on schedule as planned,' said John Payne, senior vice president of linehaul, safety and maintenance for FedEx Ground.

A grand opening was held Oct. 12.

FedEx officials said the Kernersville hub currently employs 750 people, including 250 employees who transferred from other facilities and 200 independent contractors and drivers.

Guilford County commissioners approved more than $950,000 worth of incentives for FedEx Ground to increase the tax base and create jobs.

Under the deal, FedEx Ground is expected to increase the county tax base by adding $80 million in equipment and buildings and create at least 80 new full-time jobs in Guilford County over the facility's first full year of operation. Average wages for those jobs must be least $40,584 annually.

No incentive payments have been made yet.

Betty Garrett, interim planning and development director for Guilford County, said the company was 'not ready' for incentives during the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

However, she does expect FedEx Ground to request its first incentive payment in the fiscal year 2011-2012 fiscal year.
