Sheremetyevo International Airport is the biggest Russian airport in terms of cargo traffic. In 2010 SVO handled 251 thousand tons of air freight. In the framework of its further development strategy, the airport decided to initiate the construction of a multimodal freight terminal by using best international practices for cargo handling in accordance with the market needs.
IngStroyExpert has been chosen by the project investor Kratos Group and will act as the general designer in close cooperation with Lufthansa Consulting. The Kratos group moreover implements this project in partnership with the Interros Company, the main investor and major shareholder of the planned terminal and one of Russia's largest private investment firms. 'We consider this project to be a promising one not only for us as professional investors but also for the state as a whole. Creation of a network of modern transportation logistics hubs is a key element to the country's transportation infrastructure upgrade', says Sergei Batekhin, Vice President of Interros.
The German aviation consultants will provide the conceptual layout and design of the allocated area for the new cargo terminal and its related infrastructure. Based on capacity calculations, the experts will also put forward layout proposals for an efficient Material Handling System, which will finally result in a detailed terminal design. Traffic and cargo flows on site and within the warehouse will be ascertained and work procedures will be defined, both for the handling of general cargo as well as for special cargo, such as perishable goods. Other main areas of Lufthansa Consulting's activities will include the design of IT architecture and the development of a security concept.
The overall objective of the consultancy assignment is to deliver solutions that provide maximum value in terms of functionality and cost effectiveness. The new cargo terminal is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2012.
