The U.S. Coast Gaurd have announced they have found “multiple items” that appear to be from the missing Tote cargo ship El Faro. Reports of an oil slick in the area has also been reported, all of which does not bring good news for the missing crew members, 28 of which are American. The 735 foot cargo ship has been the focus of an intense search since Thursday morning when they announced that they had lost power and were taking on water. One of the last commincations from the ship was that they had controlled the flooding, and the communications stopped. The search that had covered well over 30,000 square miles had come up empty until late Saturday night when the coast gaurd annoinced the finding of an orange life jacket. The recent discoveries include a container beleived to have been on the ship, a life ring, and miscelanious deck materials. Tim Nolan, President of TOTE Marine Puarto Rico, commented “At this time there has been no sighting of the El Faro or any life boats.” The El Faro reportedly was in route from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan Peurto Rico when the vessell went missing somewhere around Crooked Island which was one of the hardest areas hit by Hurricane Joaquin. The U.S. Coast Gaurd commented to Fox News that the waters were “pretty extreme” for the search crews.
