The MSC Stella, which arrived in New Orleans last week, broke a record by loading and unloading a total of 2,870 containers at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. The Panamanian-flagged vessel operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will transfer more containers than any other container ship that has called New Orleans.

The Stella is a 997-foot-long container ship that is part of a regular service to New Orleans from Mediterranean ports. She was built in 2004. The vessel operations will be overseen by New Orleans Terminals, one of two terminal operators that lease portions of the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal.'We're excited about the trends of increasing volumes. This once again shows MSC's commitment to growing cargo volumes through the Port of New Orleans,' says Jeff Hakala, vice president of New Orleans Terminals.

The Stella arrived during a particularly busy stretch for the Port of New Orleans. In the week-long stretch a total of 31 cargo vessels, including 15 container ships will call on the Port's docks. The 15 container calls include vessels from Hapag-Lloyd, Seaboard Marine, Maersk and Osprey Lines.

'It's exciting to see every single one of our terminal operators busy this week handling all of our traditional cargo niches, such as steel, rubber, project cargo and containers. We welcome the opportunity to move this cargo safely and efficiently to meet the needs of the international shipping community,' says Gary LaGrange, President and CEO of the Port of New Orleans.
