Peru has successfully negotiated free-trade deals with South Korea and Japan, President Alan Garcia said, agreements that are expected to help boost growth in one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

The pacts, which could start being implemented as early as next year, would complement existing deals Peru has with the United States, Canada and Singapore, among others.

Peru, whose economy is forecast to grow more than 8 percent this year, has an aggressive trade and investment agenda.

"Korea expects to grow 6 percent this year and it's clearly a country with the resources to make the investments we need," the state-run Andina news agency quoted Garcia as saying.

Garcia was in Asia for the summit of the the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Garcia has helped lure SK Energy, South Korea's biggest refiner, to invest in natural gas projects in Peru.

Peru is a top global exporter of minerals and fishmeal and has lately made a push into specialty seafoods, fruits and vegetables -- such as asparagus and artichokes.

It expects its exports to grow about 17 percent this year, to $30 billion. (Reuters)
