Poland’s PKP Cargo, the European Union’s No.2 rail cargo operator by tonnage transported, has earmarked 400 million zlotys ($110.5 million) to buy up to 20 new multi-system locomotives and strengthen its international position. The company, controlled by state-run railway operator PKP, spent around the same sum last month to buy control of regional rival AWT as it takes aim at European market leader Deutsche Bahn. PKP Cargo, with a market value of just over $1 billion, currently uses more than 1,200 locomotives, but only 10 multi-system ones, provided by Siemens and Bombardier . It initially wanted to double the number of multi-system engines, which are able to operate in different countries, but has now decided to triple the number. The new engines will be delivered in 2016 and 2017.
