The Port of Gdynia Authority and Gdynia Container Terminal (GCT) have signed an agreement to jointly develop a deepwater berth at the Bulgarskie Wharf of the Port of Gdynia.

The new berth will have a quay length of 357 metres with a maximum depth-alongside of 15 metres, making it possible for GCT to accommodate 8,000-plus TEU vessels. GCT will continue to expand its container yard and invest in more equipment in line with operational requirements. The new deepwater berth is expected to be operational in mid-2012.

Janusz Jarosiński, President of Port of Gdynia Authority, said: “Gdynia has always been the main container port for Poland. We are pleased to team up with HPH to embark on this expansion project, with an aim of turning Gdynia into a deepwater container port, in order to keep pace with the recent market developments and to meet new challenges.”

“GCT is an integral part of HPH’s port network in Northern Europe. Within four short years, it has established as a preferred feeder port for a number of shipping lines. Today, we have further demonstrated our commitment to the long-term development of a modern port infrastructure in the Port of Gdynia, which will in turn better serve our customers. The new investment will help make the Gdynia-Rotterdam trade lane a true motorway of the sea,” said Jan Westerhoud, Managing Director of HPH’s Northern Europe Division.

Jerzy Czartowski, President of Gdynia Container Terminal, said, “I am excited that we will soon be able to offer our customers the choice of making direct shipping calls to our terminal facilities and to provide more customised solutions for their Baltic business. The development is not only a breakthrough in terms of service for GCT but also a milestone for the Port of Gdynia.”
