Port of Virginia posts strong showing in August

“August was another solid month at The Port of Virginia and speaking in terms of TEUs, we’re ahead of August 2012 by more than five percent,” said Rodney W. Oliver, interim executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “For the calendar year, we’re almost seven percent ahead of where we were this time last year. We expect the heavy flow of peak-season cargo to continue, but as the retail season approaches we expect it to taper a bit, which is normal.”

In terms of TEUs, August was the fourth best single month after volumes of 205,137 TEUs in July 2013, 199,448 TEUs in October 2007, and 198,720 TEUs in November 2012.

Import TEUs tallied 97,747 and exports were 100,582 in August, increases of 1.8 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively. For the calendar year, imports are up 8.8 percent and exports are 5.2 percent.

“We’re also setting records in rail volume,” Oliver said. “August was the first time we’ve handled more than 40,000 containers in a month. We expect continued heavy rail volume for the foreseeable future and are making several operational changes to accommodate the growth.”

Virginia’s breakbulk business was also on the rise. The port handled 42,053 short tons of breakbulk cargo in August, a 65.4 percent gain over the same month last year.
