Brazilian miner Vale SA said the railway used to transport iron ore to an Atlantic Ocean port from its Carajas mine in the Amazon region has been reopened after protesters blocked the tracks for over four days. A Vale representative said in an e-mail that the railway went back into operation at about 3 p.m. local time on Saturday. Starting on Tuesday, around 150 people had cordoned off part of the tracks in the north-eastern state of Maranhao as part of a land-claim bid, according to the company and police. When running normally, the railway moves nearly 400,000 tonnes of iron ore per day aboard 12 trains that carry about 33,000 tonnes of ore each. Vale did not specify how the temporary shutdown had impacted its operations.
