Responsible Care® is a voluntary initiative in which companies work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance and to communicate about their products and processes. Earlier this year the U.S. chemical industry marked the 25-year anniversary of its adoption of Responsible Care at the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care Conference and Expo. While all participating companies were commended for their efforts, only three were recognized for going above and beyond in their safety performance. Schneider Logistics was named a Responsible Care Partner of the Year, becoming the first logistics management company to receive this prestigious honor. The Responsible Care Partner of the Year Award is the ACC’s top award and has been presented annually since 2010. It recognizes high performance and safety records of companies involved in the distribution, transportation, storage, use, treatment, disposal and/or sales and marketing of chemicals. The 93 member companies of Responsible Care are eligible for the distinction, but only three are chosen each year. The winners must have completed all Responsible Care certification obligations and had zero fatalities in the past calendar year. “Becoming a member of Responsible Care in 2009 was a natural step for us, as it aligns with Schneider’s core value of safety first and always,” said Dan Van Alstine, Schneider’s senior vice president and general manager, Dedicated Services and Logistics. “We are passionate about managing the transportation functions for our customers in an efficient and effective manner, but we are equally passionate about doing that work in the safest way possible. Like the ACC, we are never satisfied with being ‘good enough,’ and we continually search for ways to help our customers improve our shared safety performance.” ACC Responsible Care award winners are selected by a committee of internal and external experts. “I am honored to recognize those companies and individuals that truly embody the Responsible Care ethic,” said Sven Royall, chair of ACC’s Committee on Responsible Care and Vice President Global Intermediates at Shell Chemicals. “These companies and individuals are what give Responsible Care its credibility and strength. They demonstrate the chemical industry’s commitment to sound performance and the health and safety of its workers, its customers, and the communities in which we operate.” Dow Global Supply Chain Risk Management Leader Cherry Burke applauded Schneider Logistics on becoming the first logistics management company to win the award. “Dow strives to conduct business with Responsible Care Partner companies; it is a great pleasure for Dow to recognize Schneider Logistics for winning the Responsible Care Partner Award.” Responsible Care members have reduced recordable injury and illness rates by 76 percent since 1990. Since 1992 these companies have improved their energy efficiency by more than 12 percent and have reduced their greenhouse gas intensity by more than 18 percent.
