SHIFT Freight, a thriving LTL carrier based in Sante Fe Springs, California, has officially completed its bill of lading (BOL) rollout with DDC FPO, a world leader in freight process outsourcing. Now, the two trailblazers press onward to conquer new territory in the trucking industry together.
“The beauty of building an LTL carrier from scratch is that you can take every best practice out there and implement the most efficient processes imaginable,” said Tommy Skinner, Vice President of SHIFT Freight.
These operational efficiencies provide SHIFT a steady, sharpened focus on core competencies. “The more we can focus on our core competencies, the better we are going to be,” said Skinner.
For SHIFT, that means concentrating on getting their customer’s freight where it needs to be safely and on time while enhancing their customer experience. The management of a smooth-running, time-and-cost-efficient back office is necessary, but a task that takes time away from their master trade.
As a strategic partner to many of today’s trucking industry innovators, Carrier Direct introduced SHIFT to freight business process specialist DDC FPO. DDC FPO digitizes, captures and processes bills of lading, invoices and other critical documents for many top U.S. carriers.

The rollout completed in fall of 2013 helped SHIFT to standardize processes and offered a scalable platform that didn’t force them to recruit or redeploy resources as their bill count went up.
“In understanding the billing structure, it was very easy to see the value that DDC was creating,” said Skinner. After the BOL rollout was complete, SHIFT looked to see what else DDC could do for their business process management.
Data extraction from BOLs for CRM purposes and electronic document retrieval were on SHIFT’s to-do list, but, like billing, would draw attention away from the business’ bread and butter.
“With decades of experience and a wide variety of service offerings, our team was able to pin-point a solution for SHIFT and customize it to meet their exact needs,” said DDC FPO Vice President of Sales, Chad Crotty. “I’m very excited that we have been able to play a part in their rising success.”
In December, DDC began extracting customer data from SHIFT’s system based on billing activity to create a unique and exclusive database of customers. In January, DDC will begin retrieving shipping documents electronically and performing basic dimensionalizing functions through intelligent software to streamline SHIFT’s administrative operations.
“I’ve been extremely impressed with what DDC has done for SHIFT and their other clients, and I’m excited to see what they’ll do for other carriers and 3PLs as the recognition of the value in their services grows,” added Clum.
SHIFT expects to grow four times in the coming year, expanding deeper into the Midwest and Northeast, along with a number of new markets by the end of 2014.
