The BBC Steinhoelft was refloated in the Montreal South Shore canal and removed for inspection, said Josianne Martel, a spokeswoman for Canada's Transport Department.
The ship contained 1,000 tons of mainly steel materials, Martel said. No pollution or injuries have been reported.
The incident caused delays for eight other ships, according to Seaway Management Corp, which is owned by the Canadian and U.S. governments.
The Seaway connects North America's Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean and is an important route for exports of Western Canadian grain, as well as the movement of iron ore and other bulk cargoes.
An official with the Canadian Wheat Board, the country's biggest grain exporter and a frequent Seaway user, said earlier that it did not have any freight affected by the delay. (Reuters)
