Spain's state railway Renfe will partly privatize freight transportation to improve service and to increase rail's freight market share to up to 10 percent by 2020, the company said.

Renfe will create three new freight companies, one for containers, one for steel and one for special materials including paper, coal, grains and fuel, the company said in a statement.

The three new freight units, along with an existing vehicle transportation firm, will be opened up to private investment for up to 45 percent of their capital.

The Cabinet must approve the plan, Renfe said.

Press officers at Renfe and the Public Works Ministry said there was no valuation yet of the new companies. (Reuters)
