The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose Friday on strong demand for vessels across all segments. The overall index, which factors in average daily earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize vessels, rose four points, or 0.71 percent, to 565 points. The index has risen over 3 percent this week. The capesize index, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, was up six points, or 1.29 percent, to 470 points. Average daily earnings for the segment rose $6 to $4,768. Capesize rates have fallen 10 percent this week. The panamax index was up four points at 587 points. Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, were up $37 at $4,706. Panamax rates have risen 6.7 percent this week. The supramax index climbed six points to 566 points while the handysize index was up four points at 352 points. Average daily earnings for supramax vessels rose $59 to $5,916, while earnings for handysize vessels gained $51 to $5,107.
