Telvent, the leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today that it has been selected by the Barcelona Port Authority (BPA) to carry out the implementation of a global maritime management platform for the Port of Barcelona. The project will enable the BPA to put ongoing improvement processes involving port activities and services into practice to thereby optimize port facility use and increase operational efficiency.

The BPA has been working over the last few years on improving port management efficiency and ensuring port service reliability with the aim of turning the Port of Barcelona into the leading logistics platform in southern Europe. This port is currently connected to over 825 ports around the world and is considered to be one of the most important direct ocean liner transfer hubs. In 2010 the Barcelona port achieved a 19% increase in international commerce, with a total of 3.4 million travelers passing through the facilities, up by 8% since 2009.

Telvent will implement an innovative technological platform to enable maritime traffic control integration and port facility and service management, providing BPA with a unified tool to facilitate global management of port activity, increase facility security, and improve efficiency in port operations. Port operators will also be empowered with simulation tools and an advanced weather information system that integrates information from the BPA´s existing weather network and external meteorological networks, to help them quickly and effectively deal with the effects of adverse weather conditions on navigation thereby reinforcing maritime traffic safety and security.

One of the key new features of this technological platform is the process management tool that will make it possible to implement quality indicators for each activity and service provided by the BPA. As a result, the Port Authority will have the capability to establish and manage specific procedures and be on the cutting edge of operational efficiency in the port industry.

According to Telvent´s chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, "We are proud to be able to provide the Barcelona Port Authority with the technology needed to help them improve their operational efficiency. The new tools for optimizing port business will enable them to increase the quality of the service provided to port users within the context of constant growth in the movement of passengers and goods."
