South African freight logistics group Transnet said that a rail line through Swaziland could happen within two to three years.

Transnet has been looking at ways to free up capacity on its main export line leading to Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

Its current expansion plans target a capacity of 81 million tonnes by 2015, although the plan to send some general cargo off the line could take it further.

"We can then dedicate all the general freight via Swaziland ... and then dedicate the equivalent on the Richards Bay line to just coal. That will take us to about 95 million tonnes (from then expanded capacity of 81 million)," Chief Executive Brian Molefe said. (Reuters)
