Whirlpool said it was awarded $1.78 million in monetary damages after a U.S. jury found certain refrigerators made by its Korean rival LG Electronics had infringed a Whirlpool patent.

The verdict contrasts with a decision by the International Trade Commission a month ago when the trade court said LG's method of storing ice for dispensers in the doors of side-by-side refrigerators did not infringe a Whirlpool patent.

Whirlpool, which expects the Delaware District court to issue a judgment finalizing the verdict later this year, said it now plans to seek a permanent injunction to stop LG's continued infringement of the patent. (Reuters)
