U.S. regulators want to beef up safety measures on air-cargo shipments of electronic devices that contain flammable lithium ion batteries, in response to the recent crash of a UPS jet loaded with such goods.

As an interim step, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) may set rules to improve packaging and limit the size of certain battery.

The new rules may also require that pilots be warned when their planes carry such cargo.

The biggest makers of electronic devices oppose more stringent rules, favoring international shipping standards already embraced overseas.

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries have become ubiquitous in computers, cellphones and other electronic devices.
