Staff at Vopak will strike for at least two hours on Wednesday at the oil and gas storage company’s terminal at the Dutch port of Vlissingen, a union official told Reuters. Talks broke down on Tuesday evening as unions sought improved employment terms. Two unions, CNV Vakmensen and FNV Havens, are seeking jobs guarantees and a 3 percent pay hike for some 800 staff. “We’ll start with a two-hour strike by staff on the morning shift, and then we’ll ask the afternoon shift to continue it,” said Albert van Damme, negotiator for CNV Vakmensen. The duration of the afternoon strike had not been decided. During the morning work stoppage, at Vopak’s terminal in Rotterdam’s Europoort, all loading and unloading of ships was halted. Vopak has eight terminals in the Netherlands. “It’s sad that the unions want to start these actions,” Vopak spokesman Hans van Willigen said. “Hopefully both sides will come back to the table soon, but we don’t know when.”
