Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has won Air China's cargo handling contract at London's Heathrow Airport.

The three-year contract, won via a competitive tender process, will see WFS handle some 11,000 tonnes of cargo a year for the airline through its Building 550 warehouse operation at Heathrow. Air China operates daily Airbus flights from the airport to Beijing, connecting over its main hub to destinations throughout Asia.

In addition, WFS will provide cargo reception facilities for the airline throughout the UK and Ireland and be responsible for managing all trucking for Air China. This includes supporting the airline's Frankfurt and Paris freighters.

WFS is also providing office accommodation at its Heathrow premises for Air China's GSA partner, Eurasia Air Cargo.

Mr Taylor Teng, Cargo Manager UK and Ireland for Air China, said: 'We took a close look at all of the cargo handling options open to us in the UK and Ireland and our conclusion was that WFS provided the strongest overall solution. We were particularly impressed by its professional approach and attitude towards our business.'

Cliff McKrell, Operations Director for WFS, added: 'Winning such a prestigious new contract is a great way to start the year for our UK and Ireland operation. With early signs of some recovery in the overall cargo market, combined with Air China's excellent network in Asia and beyond, we look forward to a long and mutually successful business partnership with the airline.'
