A World Trade Organization panel report to be released will show that plane maker Boeing received illegal U.S. government subsidies, a top European Union official said.

"I believe that today will be a significant day for the transparency of the aviation market. I think after today no one can claim innocence in this market, let alone the most important American constructor," Joao Vale de Almeida, the European Commission's ambassador to the United States, told Reuters in an interview.

The WTO report is the latest chapter in a battle between the United States and the European Union over rival support programs for Boeing and the European airplane manufacturer Airbus.

An earlier WTO report found that Airbus had received illegal European government support.

"We believe this report will be a breakthrough moment for aviation and nothing will be same after this in the sense of identifying the extent of subsidization and the nature and the dimension of the impact of this subsidization," de Almeida said. (Reuters)
