2008 Logistics Best Valued Partner Award presented for 'true partnership'

Global supply chain leader APL Logistics has received the Logistics Best Valued Partner Award for 2008 from AAFES ' The Army & Air Force Exchange Service.' Major General Keith L. Thurgood, Commander of AAFES, presented the award at the AAFES Logistics Forum here this month.

With 3,100 facilities in 30 countries, the 43,000-employee AAFES is a joint military activity providing merchandise and services to active duty, guard and reserve members, military retirees and their families.' It operates 174 main retail stores and more than 1,300 fast food restaurants worldwide.

APL Logistics provides AAFES with origin consolidation services, air transportation and ocean transportation in conjunction with its container shipping affiliate APL.' It also provides customs house brokerage for all vendor shipments being imported to the US, Europe and throughout the Pacific.

A citation read during the award presentation by Maj. Gen. Thurgood said, 'APL Logistics has been deeply involved in our import program to reduce overall cost while improving service.' We appreciate the support and true partnership they have provided."

APL Logistics is the sole provider to AAFES for import services.' Among other responsibilities, it manages the flow of product, documents and information, and facilitates vendor relationships for AAFES.' It also provides buyer training and education to the AAFES Sales Directorate and Logistics.

In the past 12 months APL Logistics managed the transport of 3,631 import containers to AAFES distribution centers and stores.' According to AAFES, the on-time record for those shipments was 98%.
