Refinery continues to be a thriving part of Baltimore’s economy BALTIMORE, Md. -  ASR Group’s Domino Sugar refinery in Baltimore will make history on Friday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. by receiving the single largest raw sugar shipment to be delivered to any port east of the Mississippi.          The Inner Harbor’s 95-year-old refinery will set a record by receiving more than 98 million pounds of raw sugar. “This is a great moment for Domino Sugar and the Port of Baltimore,” said ASR Group’s Baltimore Refinery Manager Kelly DeAngelo. “Thanks to our dedicated employees, we have been able to increase production and efficiency, which has kept us competitive and has allowed us to continue to provide good-paying, quality jobs and contribute to the local economy.” Measuring 623 feet long and 100 feet wide, the Nord Maru vessel, which will deliver the raw cane sugar, is more than 100 feet longer than the usual cargo vessels that deliver raw cane sugar to the refinery.  On its arrival, the Maryland Pilots will direct two large tugboats in the Inner Harbor who will turn the massive vessel 180 degrees and guide it next to the refinery pier. The operation will be carefully orchestrated to end with a gentle contact to the Domino Sugar dock. The Port of Baltimore is one of the nation’s most successful ports and Domino Sugar is the Port’s largest bulk importer. Baltimore’s inland location has the shortest route of any seaport to the nation’s heartland and the large Midwest market.  Because it is home to Domino Sugar, the Port of Baltimore is the nation’s leading seaport for imported and domestic raw cane sugar in the United States.
