Back in 2010, a consignment of seven dolphins was flown to Athens and then moved to the Attica Park which was chosen for its excellent reputation for animal care. Some were returned home in 2013.This week, the remaining three of these, a 2 year old female offspring and two mature females, were flown back to Siauliai airport in Lithuania.
Andreas Togias, cargo services manager at Goldair Handling reported a smooth trouble free handling of these delicate creatures. The valuable cargo was transported from Athens International Airport by the Lithuanian Air force using a Alenia C-27j Spartan aircraft. The aircraft carried two water tanks with the three dolphins Each adult dolphin weighs about 250kg pluys with the water required , the total weight was around 3500 kilos The value of these animals as an extra tourist attraction has been very welcome. The movement of large animals of any type but especially sea mammals is always a highly difficult and tricky operation requiring much specialised handling and equipment. Goldair Handling has shown time and time again, its expertise in handling live animals.
