Cummins 2007 ISX engine lowers emissions; maximizes fuel efficiency

Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI), a Con-way company providing international truckload services, today announced that it will purchase 140 Cummins 2007 ISX engines with the Cummins Particulate Filter. The SmartWay-approved engine was selected for its performance during an over-the-road fleet test.

"CFI joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership to ensure that we're part of a long-term solution toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption from trucking operations,' said Herb Schmidt, president of CFI, a Con-way company. "We are committed to providing our drivers with the best equipment available and selecting equipment that has minimum impact on our environment. CFI applauds Cummins for its SmartWay-approved engine.'

With the new Cummins 2007 ISX engine, CFI is now able to leverage a properly specified power train (engine/transmission/axle and tires) and electronic engine settings to maximize overall fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The stand-out engine features are Cummins' patented Load-Based Speed Control, cruise control and gear-down protection that enables drivers to shift gears at a lower rpm to help optimize fuel consumption.

"We are really pleased to work with CFI. Cummins appreciates its vote of confidence in the performance and fuel efficiency of the ISX engine and the sustainable advantages it brings for our customers and for the environment,' said Jeff Jones, vice president, sales and market communications, Cummins Inc.

SmartWay Transport is a voluntary partnership between the EPA and freight industry businesses aimed at reducing emissions of carbon dioxide by 33 to 66 million metric tons and nitrogen oxide by up to 200,000 tons, as well as saving up to 150 million barrels of oil per year. The program officially opened to all companies in February 2004.

In October, CFI won its second consecutive US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Excellence Award based on its implementation of technologies and strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and other emissions from the transportation sector.
