CH2M HILL's Ports & Maritime Group has been selected by the North Carolina State Ports Authority to manage the development of a new, 600-acre container terminal in the Southport area of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County.

The North Carolina International Port will be developed under a form of Public-Private Partnership structure with CH2M HILL functioning as the owner's agent. The approximately $1 billion development program consists of project management, planning, and design of port and intermodal facilities, management of environmental issues, public outreach, and overall support. In addition, CH2M HILL will assist in the development and evaluation of various financial options for development of the Port. When complete, facility improvements to the Port will provide a minimum annual capacity of 1.5 million, 20-foot equivalent container units, 4,000 linear feet of berthing space, and an industrial park on-site for distribution centers or related commercial operations.

'This exciting project will combine an innovative financing approach with advanced marine engineering techniques to develop a new international port focused on global commerce,' noted Craig Cummings, Director of CH2M HILL's Ports & Maritime group, based in San Diego, CA.
