The head of one of the largest U.S. gateways for trade said robust demand for imported goods will likely be sustained into 2022, as companies scramble to rebuild stockpiles during an uneven rebound from the pandemic.

Since first conceived, the Oakland A’s plan to build condominiums and a new ballpark at the Port of Oakland’s Howard Terminal has sounded alarms for import/export stakeholders at the West Coast’s third-busiest port.

The Galveston Wharves has completed a $2 million infrastructure improvement project at its West Port Cargo Complex to accommodate large roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) construction and farming equipment. In June the port moved its major ro-ro tenant from Pier 10 to the complex, which will encompass 70 acres on the port’s west end when completed.

Container shipping rates from Asia to the U.S. and Europe increased to new record levels over the past week, ensuring transportation costs will stay elevated for companies heading into a peak season for rebuilding inventories.
