Two trains on the ALL railway outside of Santos, Brazil’s main port city on the southeastern coast, collided on Friday interrupting the movement of commodities by way of the line, the company said. One of the trains derailed in the city of Cubatao near Santos and hit a parked train, injuring two people, local newspapers said. ALL said via its press representative that work to remove the rail cars and clear the tracks was already under way but for now that leg of the line was not operating and it did not have a forecast for when traffic would resume. In past accidents involving derailed trains, it often took several days to get the line operating again. Most of grains and sugar shipped out of Santos Port arrives by train but trucks carry a large share of those commodities to the port as well. Most grain and sugar terminals at the port have ample stocks of product to load onto ships even without the train operating for several days.
