BRUNSWICK, GA – Following Irma’s widespread damage that struck part of southern Georgia, U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Field Operations Academy officers from Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glynco, GA were quick to respond to those affected by hurricane Irma. Equipped with chains saws, tools and muscle power the CBP officers took to the Brunswick community assisting with removing downed trees, clearing debris and checking on those in need. “Our officers live here and care about those impacted by Irma,” said Nick Sunderhaus CBP Field Operations Academy Branch Chief. “It’s about doing the right thing as we have the tools, resources and experience to make a difference.” The FLETC site in Glynco, Georgia, was used as a staging center for first responders in support of hurricane recovery efforts for all of southeastern Georgia to include Georgia Power and the Army National Guard. As in previous emergency situations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s emergency response is conducted in accordance with the Department of Homeland Security’s National Response Framework. Now that the storm has passed, FLETC leadership is developing a strategy to resume training for its more than 90 federal partner organizations at the impacted sites in Glynco, Georgia. FLETC team members are evaluating the damage to the site and beginning recovery efforts. The FLETC in Charleston began limited training yesterday, and the Glynco site is scheduled to begin training on Monday, September 25.
