Global Infrastructure Partners agreed to sell its 50% interest in the Ruby Pipeline, a Western U.S. natural gas pipeline, to publicly traded, Canadian pipeline operator Veresen Inc . for about $1.43 billion.

El Paso Pipeline Partners, an affiliate of Kinder Morgan Inc., holds the remaining 50% interest in Ruby Pipeline through a common equity interest. Kinder Morgan, North America’s largest natural gas pipeline operator, will continue to operate Ruby on a day to day basis. At the end of 2013, Kinder Morgan valued its stake at about $1.15 billion, according to the company’s securities filings.

Ruby is a large-scale natural gas transmission system delivering U.S. Rockies natural gas production to markets in the western United States. The 680-mile pipeline has a current capacity of approximately 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d), with expansion potential. The line runs nearly 1,100 kilometres from Opal, Wyo. to Malin, Ore., in the centre of the state near the California border.
