Helen Delich Bentley has been selected as one of the first dozen inductees into the Baltimore Sun’s Business and Civic Hall of Fame - “12 extraordinary men and women who have made a difference in a broad range of fields.” A who’s who of Baltimore’s business and financial communities will join her for the June 9 ceremony from 5 to 10 PM at the downtown Center Club - including Orioles’ owner and lawyer Peter Angelos, baking mogul and developer John Paterakis, Sr., retired Legg Mason chief Raymond “Chip” Mason, retired T. Rowe Price honcho James Kennedy and Eddie and Sylvia Brown from Brown Capital Management. Bentley has championed the Port for over seven decades throughout her storied career, as The Sun’s maritime editor, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission and five-term member of Congress. “Her tireless advocacy,” noted The Sun, “positioned (the Port) as one of the region’s key economic drivers for the 21st century.” “This award is not just about me,” said Bentley. “The Port deserves all the credit in the world but receives very little. No other single economic entity puts more money into the pockets of more Marylanders, year in and year out.” In 2006, then Governor Bob Ehrlich officially re-named the Port as The Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore.
